When The Intellectual Speaks In Tongues

Ambrose Andreano

There are two kinds of intellectuals: one who speaks in ‘tongues’ and one who speaks with ‘understanding.’The former is content speaking eloquence, manipulating the minds of others, causing them to admire their intelligence without actually understanding any of the assertions. The latter intentionally speaks in such a way that makes sure the other understands what is being asserted, because they would otherwise be restless knowing that their speaking was fruitless.

Listen to the Scriptures saying “For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.” And again, “I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.” Those who speak in a tongue may well have understanding and speak in the spirit, but their understanding is unfruitful. That is, their understanding does not cause growth in others. We would do well to remember this in our interactions with others.
